Hassan Mujtaba

Hassan’s art investigates the symbolic significance of imagery and the force behind the notion of institutions. He is interested in how raw and fragile human emotion, is objectified and mechanised through religious, socio-political and cultural conditioning. The homogeneity observable in, for example a congregation or performance of pilgrims, indicates how individual and collective responses are shaped by what society expects and institutions impose. His work explores this automated discipline and the feeling of confinement that it creates.
Hassan graduated from the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore where he has subsequently lectured. He works in a variety of mediums including video, photography, drawing and installation. Exhibitions include solo show 'A Monochrome Episode', at Sanat Gallery, Karachi (2016), Méré Humd(r)um, Contemporary Art from Pakistan’ at the Aicon Gallery, New York (2012) and ‘Piecing it together’ at Satrang Art Gallery, Islamabad, Pakistan (2014).
