Ujala Khan

Ujala is a Lahore based abstract artist. Being self-taught, she believes that one shouldn’t be confined by rules or limited techniques and that growing as an artist is an ongoing process as we can never put an end to inspiration. Her inspiration comes from spontaneity and chance, leaving you with a sense of freedom and empowerment that one yearns for. She adds multiplicity to her work by using contrasting shapes and bold colours with attention to detail and texture. Experimenting with techniques such as raw brush strokes, dry palette knifing, adding paint directly from the tube, sgraffito, splattering, pouring, pulling and scraping. The usage of repetitive rough strokes conveys reactions to the anxiety and depression of the modern world in the hope to reignite spirituality by showing ideas of survival and faith.
"My goal is to create disparity in the viewer’s mind, with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts, creating a dissonance between form and content while dtysfunctioning form and language. By objectifying emotions and examining duality, different meanings come to mind, which leads to intense personal moments formed by rules and lapses, acceptance and refusals, luring the viewer round and round in circles."
My art is … both visceral and reflective with dense expressionism.
